Chances are good that you have been brushing your teeth for so long that it has practically become second nature. But, are you brushing your teeth correctly? You may be surprised that becoming a toothbrushing pro takes a little practice, but don’t worry, while it does take a little effort, it isn’t too complicated.

At a minimum, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day. But it is also a good idea to brush after every meal. If you decide to do that, you should wait for thirty minutes before brushing. Why the wait? Waiting will give the saliva in your mouth time to wash away the acids left over from your meal, and keep those acids from damaging your tooth enamel. To do a thorough job, you need to spend two minutes brushing. Most people don’t spend that amount of time, and so you may need to time yourself for a few weeks.

Your toothbrush should have soft bristles that are in good shape. If the bristles are worn or flattened; or if you have had your toothbrush longer than three months, it is time to retire it and buy a new one.

Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth. Scrub the outsides of your top and then the bottoms of your teeth, and then repeat for the insides. To brush the insides of your front teeth, hold your toothbrush vertically and use short, up-and-down strokes. Rinse your mouth, and the bristles of your toothbrush when you are finished. Don’t forget to to brush the chewing and biting surfaces.
